Obesity during pregnancy can put mother and child at risk for
several pregnancy and health related complications. But,
being one in every three an obese in USA obesity during
pregnancy is very common.
Complications For Mother during pregnancy:

  • Preeclampsia: a condition that causes hypertension,
    fluid retention, and swelling. When acute, can hamper
    placental blood flow, and can put baby in danger.
  • Gestational Diabetes: diabetes that develops during
    pregnancy, preventing your body from breaking down
    sugar and baby in the womb can put on weight.
  • Cesarean Section: cause problems during delivery,
    labor is slow and prolonged.
  • Postpartum Infection: can make postpartum recovery
    difficult and develop infections.
Complications for Baby

  • Macrosoma: baby puts on too much weight, making labor and delivery complicated. Babies often get hurt during birth.
  • Neural Tube Defects: low level of folic acid during first trimester, can be detected early in pregnancy through ultrasound imaging. But  obesity in
    mother produce poor ultrasounds as ultrasound waves can not penetrating extra layers of fat easily.
  • Childhood Obesity: Studies shows that obese mother often have obese child.
Obese pregnant women should consult gynecologist and consider following guidelines.

  • Lose Weight Before accruing Pregnancy: If you are obese, plan losing weight through proper diet and exercise before conceiving. Even nominal
    weight loss can help reduce risk of pregnancy complications and even surgical delivery.
  • Monitor Weight Gain: despite obesity, you should not lose weight during pregnancy. Weight loss campaign can prevent your baby from getting the
    calories and nutrients, needs for proper growth of fetus.
  • Exercise: Exercise should be continuous throughout pregnancy, under supervision of experts/doctors. Moderate exercise help mothers deliver
    healthy baby without much complication and sometime can results in normal delivery. Also please don't mind dropping few beauty classes.
